1 John 4:7 (New American Standard Bible)
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

PASTOR’S COMMENTARY

Yesterday many in America celebrated Valentine's Day with ceremonies and the exchange of tokens of love. But most of them probably don’t know the story or the origin of the event.

Initially, it was known as “Saint Valentine's Day.” Legend has it that a priest named Valentine was given sainthood because of his devotion to God's ordained marriage. His stance to marry a couple in defiance of the Emperor's decree not to marry men eligible for military service cost Valentine his life.

When he was asked by a couple who loved each other but also loved the LORD enough to desire not to sin, Valentines' heart was touched. Valentines' love for the LORD motivated his action. He understood God was a God of love. So, he gave his life for love.

In God’s Word for today, the writer proclaims that we cannot know true love until we love the LORD. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the LORD will provide enough grace that we can love one another as He has commanded. Love is about giving more than candy or a pretty card. Godly love is about giving yourself.
