Isaiah 45:5–7 (NASB)
“I am the Lord, and there is no other; Besides Me is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun. That there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these.
This passage speaks of God's Sovereignty which means that God is the supreme authority, and all things are under His control. It defines God as the Creator, Owner, and Possessor of heaven and earth. Based upon the fact that God is the Creator of heaven and earth, gives Him absolute right and full authority to do or allow whatever He desires.
The recent events caused by the winter storm reveals that man is not sovereign. Mankind's knowledge is restricted, and human power is limited. Those in governmental authority in Texas did not believe that a storm would cause such devastation, so they were not prepared.
While we pray for those who are suffering as a result of this calamity, we should also let it be a reminder that man is not in control of anything, not even himself. When we become self-reliant, we depend less on God, who is Sovereign.
While the LORD is to be praised for all that He has allowed man to accomplish through technology, we must never forget that there is no Sovereign God beside Him.
