1 Kings 19:12 ESV (English Standard Version)

And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.

Pastor's Commentary

The answer to the question “Does God speak to us today” is an emphatic yes! The challenge is, are we listening to His voice? God speaks to different people in many various forms. In the proceding verses in God’s Word for today, the LORD spoke to His servant Elijah in a low whisper. The New Living Translation renders it a gentle whisper while the King James says in a still, small voice.

Elijah had just experienced a hurricane, a forest fire, and then an earthquake, but all three were void of the voice of God. So likewise, many today expect God to speak to us in an earth-shattering manner when He is talking to us in a quiet casual conversation. We can sense the heat, see the fire, we can feel the power of the wind and rain, and we can experience the rumble and shaking of the earthquake. But, sometimes, to hear the voice of God, we just need to be quiet and listen.
