Matthew 6:19–20 (NLT)
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.

PASTOR’S COMMENTARY

When we become so focused on material things, frustration, confusion, and disappointment will be the end result. Jesus spoke these words to help us keep a spiritual-minded focus.

Moths are creatures of nature; they eat expensive clothes as well as cheap ones. Rust is a natural chemical element, which can destroy the most durable metal. And thieves are sin-natured human beings who can find ways to break-in no matter how hard we try to prevent them.

In this passage's context, the word treasure refers to a place where something valuable was secured or hidden. It was called a storehouse. But treasures can be anything we hold dear to our hearts. Jesus wants us to keep HIM, and heaven closes our hearts. On Christ the Solid Rock we stand, all other ground is sinking sand. Let’s store up Jesus!
