Exodus 18:20 NLT (New Living Translation)
Teach them God’s decrees, and give them His instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives.
After being enslaved by the Egyptians for over 400 years, God’s people were ignorant of the ways of the LORD. In addition, they had been exposed to the many gods of their slave masters, and the pollution resulted in confusion about what God required.
After their deliverance, Moses tried to handle and settle every dispute between God’s people. But his wise father-in-law, Jethro, advised Moses to seek assistants from qualified men. Jethro also gave Moses a two-fold process of preparation for his assistants. The first was to teach them, and the second was to show them.
God’s Word for today is a good model for church leadership. Teaching involves giving instructions on how to do it, while showing and demonstrating what is to be done. Leaders are called to explain God’s Words and to be a visible example of what is taught. This model applies to every area of the Christian life.
