Ezekiel 33:7 ESV (English Standard Version)

So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from My mouth, you shall give them warning from Me.

Pastor's Commentary

Perhaps one of the worse attributes a pastor can have is a desire to be a “people pleaser.” It has the potential to dull our ears from hearing clearly from God. The Word of God is not always what people want to hear, but it is always what people need to hear.

In God’s Word for today, the LORD reminded the Prophet Ezekiel he had been placed among the people as a “watchman.” In this context, the word means more than a guard on a wall, but one who observes the behavior of the people inside the wall. His duty was to warn those whose lack of trust, unbelief, and moral conduct was contrary to God’s decrees.

Unfortunately, the people did not heed the warnings from the prophet because they did not believe that Ezekiel’s words were from the LORD. Ultimately, their refusal to act according to God’s Word caused them to be captured by a foreign nation.

God still speaks through those He has called to be “watchmen” today. The messages they preach are from His mouth and not the preachers. The message of warning may step on toes, but they have the power to keep our feet on a path that pleases the LORD.
