but in your hearts honor Christ the LORD as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

PASTOR'S COMMENTARY

The Christian community is under attack, and according to the Bible, it will worsen before it gets better. But it is nothing compared to what the saints that the Apostle Peter was writing to were experiencing. Their stand for the faith in Jesus Christ caused most to be persecuted and some to lose their lives.

Peter informed them that their action of steadfast faith was honoring the LORD. He encouraged them to be ready to give an answer to all those who challenged their belief in Christ Jesus, considering what they were going through.

The same applies to us today. Making biblical truth-based views known may not cause us to lose our lives, but it is causing some Christians to lose their jobs and positions. And while we do not need to defend ourselves, we must defend the integrity of God’s Word without compromise.

Yet, our defense should not be done so with arrogant pride but in the spirit of respectful humility. When we do, it’s possible that others may see our good works and glorify God.
