Philippians 4:15 ESV (English Standard Version)

And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only.

Pastor's Commentary

Thirty years ago, my wife and I were in what we call “our wilderness.” It was a difficult time in our life. Leaving our former church family was hard, but we were confident of God’s call upon our lives for me to be a pastor. But we experienced a road of what we perceived as rejections.

I reflect on those times between September and October every year because they remind me of God’s wisdom, power, and grace. Three churches received us, welcomed us warmly, and led us to believe that they wanted us to be the lead servants of their church. But the result was not what was verbally promised.

At this very low point in our lives, we received a call from the New Piney Grove Baptist Church. The emotion of gratitude of the Apostle Paul in God’s Word for today expresses how we feel every year at this time. God used “you only” to provide meaning for our ministry of servitude. During our 30-year partnership, we have received from you more than we have given to you. So, we want to let you know that we are proud to be your pastor and wife.
