Philippians 2:8-9 NET (New English Translation)

He humbled Himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death —even death on a cross! As a result God exalted Him and gave him the name
that is above every name,

Pastor's Commentary

In yesterday’s Adult Faith Development Sunday school class, we were told that a name connects us to our identity. Our Bible teacher Nathan Amest explained that the biblical character Jacob, lived up to his name as a supplanter when he took advantage of his brother Esau’s hunger and a trickster when he deceived his aging father. It was discussed that God used a process consisting of a struggle, and a debate before achieving the results of brokenness. Afterward, God changed Jacob’s name to “a prince of God.”

Before the Resurrection of Christ, Jesus was an ordinary male Jewish name. But after Mary’s Son, struggle on the cross after He debates with the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane, His name was exalted above every name. The result was that every knee would bow, and every tongue would confess that He is LORD, King, and Savior.

There is Power In the Name of JESUS! So call on His name when you find yourself drifting. As Bonita Tharpe told us, He will help you “Stay the Course.”
